Earlier this week, security researcher Rishi Narang reported a flaw related to how Chrome, still in beta, behaves with undefined handlers, while another researcher, Aviv Raff, developed a proof-of-concept demo that showed Chrome could be hit with a carpet-bombing flaw.

The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error when handling the “SaveAs” function. On saving a malicious page with an overly long title (title tag in HTML), the program causes a stack-based overflow and makes it possible for attackers to execute arbitrary code on users’ systems.

It’s been only a few days since Google released its Chrome browser, and security researchers are still digging into the software in search of the first few flaws.

Here’s how BKIS describes the vulnerability and how it could be exploited:

A company in Vietnam has turned up the latest vulnerability in Chrome, according to a story posted to Information Week’s Web site. Bach Khoa Internet Security says that the Chrome 0.2.149.27 release is susceptible to a critical buffer-overflow flaw, which could allow a remote attacker to take control of a PC. BKIS says it has reported the vulnerability to Google.

To exploit the Vulnerability, a hacker might construct a specially crafted Web page, which contains malicious code. He then tricks users into visiting his Website and convinces them to save this Page. Right after that, the code would be executed, giving him the privilege to make use of the affected system.

I’m not one to complain about tech products gone girly, but it’s unnecessary for companies like Sony to constantly shove pop-star paraphernalia down our throats. A purple PSP coupled with “Assassins Creed” or “God of War” would be a satisfying bundle for girl gamers. I’m not paying $199 for a purple PSP if I have to be inundated with the likes of Ms. Montana.

Word of a new attempt to impress female gamers showed up Tuesday on Sony’s official PlayStation blog. This year, a “lilac”-colored PSP will be released.

At $199, the console will come in a bundle that includes a Hannah Montana game, episodes from the show, and stickers for an added girly touch. For the same price, Sony will also sell an “Assassins Creed” bundle that includes a black console and other unannounced content.

Lady gamers were peeved last November when a pink “Guitar Hero” controller was released, compliments of the tween band Aly & AJ.

Current, which also has an office in Los Angeles, went through a round of layoffs in the middle of November.

“No, not true,” a Current spokesman told CNET News in an e-mail. “I have no idea where this comes from.”

A rumor floated on the Twitter account known as The Media Is Dying–which, for obvious reasons, has been fairly active as of late–indicated on Wednesday morning that Current Media, the cable and Web media company co-founded by former Vice President Al Gore, is closing its San Francisco office. The Twitter account, which has broken a handful of accurate layoff and shutdown stories as of late, claimed that it had “confirmed” the office closing.

But Current was quick to deny the rumor. Not that we have to remind you, but don’t believe everything you read on Twitter.

It’s a bold prediction, considering what Apple has demonstrated with the
iPhone. It may also be wrong.

Open allows experimentation. Open encourages competition. Open wins. Amazon needs to get with the program. Or, like AOL and MSN, Amazon will wind up another online pioneer who ends up a belated guest at the party it planned to host.

Indeed, though I’d like O’Reilly to be right on this, I think that the iPhone, which he uses to prove his point, actually demonstrates against it. O’Reilly writes:

I don’t think I agree. On my Kindle, I read a variety of books that I downloaded for free from Project Gutenberg, and I suspect that this will only increase as more and more free content is formatted for the Kindle.

But it’s easy to see why Amazon might disagree and why maybe, just maybe, it may succeed to the industry’s detriment. Open standards do tend to win over a market. What they don’t do is guarantee a winner, which is likely why Amazon is content to play its hand rather than the open-standards hand that has yet to win over the market, just as it failed to win the emerging digital-music market.

O’Reilly then explains that the Kindle doesn’t provide this same loophole (i.e., allowing open-formatted e-books to be read on the Kindle in the same way that the iPhone enables Web applications to run on the iPhone, and in which the
iPod encouraged MP3s and other free formats to flourish on the iPod).

(Apple) seems to have a knack for balancing the benefits of both open and closed architectures that Amazon has yet to discover. While Apple maintains tight control over what goes into the App Store, there’s a loophole big enough to drive a truck through: Any Web page can act as an application for the iPhone.

O’Reilly Media founder Tim O’Reilly makes a provocative claim relative to Amazon’s successful e-book reader, the Kindle: embrace open e-book standards, or be run over by them.

O’Reilly’s argument is much stronger when denouncing Amazon’s “you must buy it from us” mentality, because it by definition limits the size of the market. Some, like Apple, may be able to execute against such a vision, but the odds of getting the world to beat a path to one’s door–in the way that Microsoft did for Office and Apple did for the iPod–is difficult, indeed.

O’Reilly is right to argue this:

O’Reilly is right that Amazon has better odds in going with open standards. Just look at how well Sony has fared in e-books. But that’s the risk Amazon is running, and it’s one that has the potential to pay off big-time, if the company does it well. I believe that open standards are the right way to go, but Amazon may feel that its up-front investment in creating a device worthy of the e-book market justifies a winner-take-all strategy.
